| Breaking News | | Friday, April 6th, 1962: Giants Valentine to Miss Year The season is finished for Fred Valentine of the New York (N) Giants. The club announced today that he will forego the rest of the year because of injury. | | Monday, September 11th, 1961: Big Bang! 3 HR for Philadelphia's Altman Philadelphia center fielder George Altman led the Phillies to a 14-5 triumph over the New York (N) Giants, crushing three home runs.
"He's scary good when he's swinging the bat like that," said the Philadelphia skipper.
Indeed, Altman put up some "scary good" numbers: three homers, 4 hits in 4 at-bats with 3 runs and 10 RBIs.
"Guys like that," said the manager, "make my job ten times easier."
In 1961 Altman is hitting .332, batted in 90 runs with 29 home runs and 85 runs scored. | | Monday, September 11th, 1961: Year Over for Giants Schell Danny Schell of the Giants just might have to call it quits for the season. The 33-year-old New York (N) left fielder received a possible season-ending injury against the Philadelphia Phillies recently at Polo Grounds IV. Schell suffered a strained thigh muscle while running the bases. The Giants medical staff said he could be out quite some time, as much as one week.
Posting a .312 batting average to date, Schell has 29 home runs and 71 RBIs. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | RF Fred Valentine | pinched nerve (neck) | 9-10 months | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 14-14, .500 PCT | | Position in Division | 3rd, 1.0 GB | | Record at home | 8-6, .571 PCT | | Record on the road | 6-8, .429 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 4-2, .667 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 6-2, .750 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 2-5, .286 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 12-9, .571 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 13-14, .481 PCT | | Record in May | 1-0, 1.000 PCT |
